Westerners in Oman often have the sense of inhabiting a parallel universe: there are all the familiar expressions of the mobile-phone culture, and then there are the camels.
Camels cruise through Muscat, head and hump sticking out of a Toyota pick-up, apparently at home in the fast lane. Or they plod in from the dunes at Bowsher, transporting a be-sandaled passenger along the slow lane of the motorway - in the wrong direction.

MUSCAT Tours, Travel and Activities
Muscat is the capital of Oman and the country's largest city.
The city referred to as "Muscat" is in fact three smaller towns which have grown together over time. They are: Muscat - often referred to as the "walled city", Muscat proper is the site of the royal palaces, Matruh (and other spelling variations) - originally a fishing village, Matruh is home to the maze-like Matruh Souq, and Ruwi - generally considered the commercial and diplomatic centre of the city.

VISIONS OF OMAN
Bargain for frankincense in Muscat's Mutrah Souq; and sip fruit juice along the corniche or something stronger at the majestic Al-Bustan Palace Hotel. Picnic under the palms in Wadi Shab en route to Sur's dhow-filled harbor; sample Oman's best nightlife at turtle-nesting sites in Ras al-Jinz and fall asleep counting stars in Wahiba Sands; watch the silversmiths at work at Nizwa or buy a carpet on top of Jebel Shams, teetering on the edge of Oman's Grand Canyon.
