Ecuador is the most diminutive of the Andean countries, yet it offers more physical and cultural diversity than almost any country on the planet.
Ecuador has an array of vibrant indigenous cultures, well-preserved colonial architecture, otherworldly volcanic landscapes and dense rainforest. And all that in a nation no bigger than the US state of Nevada.
Add to that an extensive user-friendly bus system and you end up with a country that is both exciting and easy to travel in.

Cuenca is the third largest city in Ecuador, capital of the Azuay province. It is located in the Sierra, the highlands of Ecuador at about 2500m (8200 ft) above sea level. Its full name is Santa Ana de los cuatro ríos de Cuenca.
It was founded in 1557 by the Spanish explorer Gil Ramírez Dávalos. The foundation of the city was commissioned by Andres Hurtado de Mendoza, at that time ruler of the Viceroyalty of Peru, who was a native of Cuenca, Spain.

QUITO Tours, Travel and Activities
When it comes to setting, Quito has it made. Tucked amid a high Andean valley, Quito is flanked by majestic mountains, and on a clear day, several snowcapped volcanoes are visible in the distance. Despite the fact that it's only 22km south of the equator, Quito's elevation gives it a wonderful springlike climate year-round.
Strictly controlled development has kept it wonderfully preserved, and its bustling street life is an exciting contradiction of tradition and chaotic modernity jammed together in one of South America's most spectacular colonial centers.

ECUADOR: MOUNTAINS, GLACIERS, VOLCANOES & THE WORLD'S HARDIST KIDS
Any journey in the highlands is dominated by magnificent glacier-clad volcanoes, including Cotopaxi, which at 5897m is one of the highest active volcanoes in the world. Climbers from all over the world get all worked up at the opportunity to set personal altitude records on this and many other peaks.
Further south, hiking around the country's highest peak, Chimborazo (6310m), gives you the chance to chat with the incredibly tough children who spend their days herding a handful of sheep in the páramo (Andean grasslands).
