Dabbling its toes in the Caribbean Sea, Belize has more in common with its island neighbours than with the fiery volatility of Central America. Its history is thoroughly coup-free.
Spanish and British influences remain: the population are English-speaking. Creole and Mestizos ethnic groups dominate, and this tiny country has an atmosphere so very laid-back it's almost comatose.

Belize City is the largest city of Belize. It is located on a small peninsula sticking out into the Caribbean. It was the capital city until flooding and other damage from a hurricane prompted the government to relocated to Belmopan in the geographic center of the country.
Belize City today remains the commercial capital of the country and is home to about 75,000 people. View the Colonial Governor's Mansion, Redbrick St. John's Cathedral, and the Supreme Court buildings, flanked by cannons used in the Battle of St. George's Caye in 1798.
From Belize City visit the impressive Maya site of Xunantunich. Before reaching the entrance of this ancient city, you are hand-cranked across the Mopan River by a nineteenth century ferry.
"El Castillo" (the castle), is the largest temple at Xunantunich and shows it's dominance by its towering height. From the top of "El Castillo" view the panoramic vistas of the surrounding rain forests in the Cayo District as well as the bordering towns between Belize and Guatemala

SUGGESTED ITINERARIES: BELIZE
At 180 miles (290km) long, Belize's barrier reef is the longest in the western hemisphere. To the west of the reef are numerous cayes basking in warm water. The two most popular with travelers are Caye Caulker for the low-budget and Ambergris Caye for the more cashed-up resort-oriented.
Caulker's reef is smaller but arguably nicer. Just a short boat ride from the eastern shore, it offers some of the world's best diving, snorkeling and fishing. Underwater visibility can be an astonishing 200 feet (60m) and the tropical fish are spectacular
