Puerto Rico is where four centuries of Spanish Caribbean culture comes face to face with the American convenience store.
This leads to some strange juxtapositions - parking lots and plazas, freeways and fountains, skyscrapers and shanties - but it's all apiece with the Caribbean's hybrid history. US and Canadian citizens do not require visas or passports but must have valid ID.

SAN JUAN Tours, Travel and Activities
San Juan was founded by Spanish colonists in 1521 and is the oldest city in Puerto Rico. Today, San Juan serves as Puerto Rico's most important seaport, as well as the main manufacturing, financial, cultural, and tourist center.
In Spanish colonial times, most of the urban population resided in what is known now as Old San Juan. Old San Juan is located on the western half of a small island (the Isleta de San Juan) connected to the mainland by bridges and a causeway.

SUGGESTED ITINERARIES: PUERTO RICO
Travelers who venture into Puerto Rico's mountainous interior or explore its undeveloped coasts come across stately hill towns where the locals in the plaza seem to have been feeding the same pigeons for decades, and reefs where divers can see 30 species of fish in as many seconds.
Tourist authorities are fond of promoting El Yunque reserve as the only tropical forest in the US national park system. Locals believe the god of happiness hangs out on El Yunque, and you'll understand why when you hike through this magnificent rainforest. On a clear day you can even bag an eyeful of the Virgin Islands.
